10 family activities to try these spring school holidays
Spring has sprung, and so too have the spring school holidays! No matter how you’re planning on spending it, consider adding one of these family-friendly spring activities into the mix.
Let the kids try a cooking class
The kids are out of school, and it’s time to get them into the kitchen! You could outsource by finding a cooking school in your area (hello, built-in babysitting!) or you could be brave and let the kids run rampant in your own kitchen. No-bake recipes are perfect for that - and we've shared our favourites right here.
Hit the movies
School holidays mean movies, and there are plenty on at the cinemas! Check out the latest screenings in your area, or (if you’re in lockdown or simply not feeling like leaving the house) host your own movie marathon at home. Spend the day setting up a pillow fort with the kids and making popcorn, and enjoy!
Try your hand at pottery
Get crafty with the kids and try your hand at some pottery! You don’t even need a kiln or a wheel to make beautiful creations – with air-dry clay, the world is your oyster! Click here for five at-home pottery projects.
Visit your local library
Wonders await at your local library – free and affordable wonders, no less! From story readings to workshops and activities, there’s always something on and a quick Google will reveal the latest program at your library. We promise, the kids will love it just as much as you do.
Get a culture fix
From the art gallery to the museum, there are no doubt plenty of ways to give the kids a culture injection over these school holidays. Your local probably has a free kids’ program running, too. You don't even need to leave the house to get a culture fix - check out some of the cultural attractions on offer online: we love The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, The Smithsonian in Washington, DC and the The Natural History Museum in London.
Take a drive
Here in Australia, we’re blessed with beautiful natural surrounds. Get out in the car and enjoy them. You could make a day trip out of it, or just bundle the kids into the car for a scenic drive - be sure to pack a delicious picnic to enjoy on the go (we love SoYoung's lunch poches for activities like this).
Off to market
When else can you head out during the week for a family meal other than during the school holidays? In fact, take your family dinner to the next level with a trip to a night market. There’s truly no dining experience quite like it.
Hit the beach, pool or local watering hole
Celebrate the warmer weather and hit up your local swimming spot – it could be a pool, a water park, the beach or a creek or river! Why not pack a picnic? We’ve listed the must-have essentials right here.
Go wild with an animal encounter
Looking for a wild school holiday activity? How does feeding llamas, riding camels or watching whales sound? We’re lucky to have plenty of beautiful native wildlife here in Australia, so find out about your nearest sanctuary, get out on the water for a whale watching tour or even try a farm stay.
Get gardening
Nothing says spring like flowers, right?! Get into the garden with the kids and plant some of your own! While you’re there, try one of these kid-friendly garden projects – we think you’ll love them.
