Keep school lunches, work meals, and on-the-go food safe from morning prep to the last bite. Our range of lunchbox ice packs includes flexible gel packs, large nylon ice packs, and trusted brands like MontiiCo and B.Box — so whether you need a slim pack for a kids' bento box or a large gel pack that doubles as a first-aid ice pack, you'll find the right fit here. All packs are reusable, BPA-free, and food safe.
Australian summers are unforgiving. Research by the NSW Food Authority found that sandwiches in a lunchbox without any cooling device were nearly as warm as those in a paper bag — and in temperatures above 25°C, harmful bacteria can reach dangerous levels within just a few hours. A good ice pack inside an insulated lunchbox is the single most effective thing you can do to keep school lunch safe to eat.
Traditional hard ice bricks are inexpensive and widely available, but they have real drawbacks — they crack over time, go rock-hard in the freezer (which takes up valuable lunchbox space), and don't conform to the shape of the bag. Flexible nylon gel packs like our Frostlock large gel pack stay soft and mouldable even when fully frozen. They wrap around containers, fit flush against the sides of insulated bags, and provide more even cooling across the whole box.
Gel packs are the better choice when:
Ice bricks are fine when:
A quality gel ice pack inside a well-insulated lunchbox will keep food at a safe temperature for 6–8 hours under normal Australian conditions. This is plenty for the typical school or work day — even accounting for bags left outside classrooms in warm weather. For extra protection on very hot days (above 35°C), use two packs or freeze food items like yoghurt pouches as an additional cold source.
For standard kids' bento boxes and insulated lunch bags, a medium to large format pack (roughly 20×15cm) gives the best coverage. Our Frostlock large nylon gel pack is oversized specifically to cover more interior surface area of a standard lunchbox. For slim lunch bags or backpack pockets, a slimmer flat pack is the better fit.
Most quality gel ice packs last for years with basic care. Rinse with cool water after each use, dry flat, and freeze overnight ready for the next day. Avoid dropping them on hard surfaces when fully frozen, and never put them in a microwave unless they specify its safe to do so.
Q: How long does an ice pack keep food cold in a lunchbox?
A gel ice pack inside a quality insulated lunch bag typically keeps food cold for 6–8 hours — enough to cover a full school or work day. Factors that affect this include ambient temperature, how well-insulated the bag is, and whether you freeze the pack overnight rather than just chilling it. For Australian summers above 35°C, consider using two packs or adding a frozen item like a juice popper as extra cooling.
Q: Are the gel packs safe if punctured near food?
Yes — our gel packs use a non-toxic, food-safe gel. The material is BPA-free and meets food contact safety standards. That said, a punctured pack should be replaced, as the gel can dry out and the pack will no longer retain cold effectively.
Q: What is the difference between a gel ice pack and an ice brick?
Ice bricks are typically hard plastic filled with water or gel — they're firm even when frozen. Gel packs (especially nylon-shell packs) stay flexible and mouldable when defrosted, meaning they can be flattened to the shape of your bag and provide more even cooling. Gel packs also tend to hold their temperature longer and are less likely to crack or leak over time.
Q: Can I use a lunchbox ice pack as a first-aid ice pack for injuries?
Yes. Our large nylon gel packs are identical in construction to clinical cold therapy packs used for injuries. They can be applied to bumps, sprains, and bruises just like a medical cold pack — making them a genuinely dual-purpose product worth keeping in your first-aid kit as well as your lunchbox drawer. For best results use the Frostlock with it's soft cover to protect delicate skin from the cold.
Q: How do I get the most cooling out of my ice pack?
Freeze overnight (at least 8 hours) rather than just a few hours. Place the pack on top of or surrounding food rather than on the bottom — cold air sinks, so top placement is more effective. Pre-chill the lunchbox itself by leaving it open in the freezer for 10 minutes before packing. Keep food in the fridge right up until the moment it goes in the lunchbox. Fill the lunchbox or choose the smallest size to fit the containers as dead air heat up fast and increases the internal temperature of the box.
Q: Do I need one or two ice packs?
For most school lunchboxes and insulated bags, one large gel pack is sufficient for a standard day (up to 7–8 hours). For bigger bags, longer days, very hot weather (35°C+), or lunchboxes that aren't well-insulated, two packs make a noticeable difference. Many families buy a pair so there's always one frozen and ready while the other is in use.
Q: What brands of ice packs do you stock?
We carry our own Frostlock large nylon gel packs alongside leading Australian brands including MontiiCo, B.Box, Yumbox, So Young and Arctic Zone. This means you can find a pack matched to your existing lunchbox brand, or try our own Frostlock pack for the same performance at a better price point.
Q: How do I clean and care for my gel ice pack?
Rinse with cool water after each use and dry flat before returning to the freezer. Most packs can also be wiped with a mild antibacterial spray. Avoid putting gel packs in the dishwasher — high heat can degrade the outer shell. With proper care, a quality nylon gel pack should last 2–3 years of daily school use.
Q: Are your ice packs safe for children?
Yes. All packs in our range use non-toxic, BPA-free gel and food-safe materials. As a general safety precaution (standard across the industry), keep gel packs away from children under 3, as the outer shell is not designed to withstand biting or sharp impacts from young children.
Q: Do you ship ice packs across Australia?
Yes — we ship Australia-wide. Ice packs are shipped unfrozen (they need to be frozen at home before first use). Standard and express shipping options are available at checkout.
Founded in 2009, our family-run business was the first to introduce leak-proof bento-style lunch boxes to Australia and New Zealand.
Today, our range and business has grown, but our mission remains the same: to hand-select high quality lunch products so you can feel relieved your kids are enjoying healthy food (well, occasionally).
