9 nut-free recipes for the lunch box
Packing school lunches that are free from nuts is an important responsibility for us parents – and not just parents of children with nut allergies. Whether your school has nut restrictions or not, it’s a good idea to have some nut-free recipes for the lunch box in your arsenal. Here are a few of our favourites.
Chicken salad sandwiches
Level up your sandwich game with this delicious chicken salad sandwich – even your kids will love it! The filling can be made in advance for easy meal prep, then simply slather it onto some fresh white bread and pop it into your Yumbox Panino (or cut up in your Yumbox Original). Perfect for school or work!
Nut-free muesli bars
Supermarket muesli bars are great to have on hand for the lunch box, but it’s hard to know what’s in them – especially when it comes to traces of nuts. That’s why we prefer to make our own; it’s also much cheaper and a lot more nutritious. This recipe in particular features rolled oats, dried fruit and rice bubbles. Yum!
DIY tacos
This taco recipe is so simple and so versatile! Substitute in your child’s favourite taco fillings, choose between hard or soft tacos (or even corn chips for a tasty dip-style meal) and add in extra veggies if you’re feeling crazy. Tomato pasta
Who doesn’t love tomato pasta? It’s super easy, incredibly tasty and the perfect nut-free recipe for the Yumbox. We love that we can serve it up for dinner (in no more than 15 minutes, too) and then use the leftovers for school and work lunches the following day. That’s what we call a win-win.
Healthy muffins
Muffins packed with vegetables – that are actually delicious?! Yep, the day has finally arrived. These super healthy, super tasty muffins are the perfect breakfast on the go or morning tea snack. They’re made with grated zucchini and carrots but you wouldn’t know it, thanks to the sweetness of the over-ripe bananas and the honey/ maple syrup.
Mini crustless quiches
These mini crustless quiches look as good as they taste. Packed with classic ingredients like ham, cherry tomatoes and cheddar cheese, they’re a great nut-free recipe to have on hand for the lunch box. You can also change them up by adding your children’s favourite fillings!
Chocolate bliss bites
We love bliss balls (or bliss bites, when our rolling skills aren’t quite there!). They’re the perfect healthy, sweet treat to pack into the Yumbox as they fit snugly inside the dip well – just pack a toothpick if your child struggles to get theirs out. They freeze really well, too. These chocolate ones are on high rotation in our house right now!
