Today, Friday June 7, is World Food Safety Day – a day started by the United Nations to draw attention to the importance of food safety and security. So, in honour of the day, we’re sharing the ways your favourite lunch products are working every single day to keep your kids’ (and your own!) food safe.
The entire Yumbox range is specially designed to ensure food safety. Each Yumbox – whether it’s a Tapas, Panino, Original or Minisnack – is made entirely from food-safe materials, is BPA-free and phthalates-free. The outer box is made from sturdy ABS, a harmless plastic that is resistant to corrosive chemicals and physical impact (no cracks or chips that can house nasty bacteria!), and the internal tray is made from TritanTM. You can read aaaaaaaall about the safety benefits of Tritan right here. Not to mention, the silicon seal keeps all Yumbox compartments airtight, which won’t just stop your food from spoiling, drying out and transferring/developing odours, but is also said to provide protection from chemical, biological and physical contamination.
Like with any insulated food jar, there are steps you need to take to ensure it is prepared to safely hold your food for an extended period of time. Kylie from Kidgredients has revealed her tips for keeping your insulated food jar clean and safe for multiple uses, which we shared in a blog post not too long ago. To sum up, ensure that food isn’t ever hotter than 4 degrees celsius or colder than 60 degrees celsius in your Zuppa if you’re planning on storing it for an extended period of time (around two to four hours, Kylie says). For cold food, make sure you take it straight out of the fridge and pop it into an insulated cooler bag (inside your Yumbox Zuppa) with an ice pack. For hot food, pack it when it’s way too hot to eat – more on that here. To properly prep your insulated food jar, to keep it clean and in good condition, Kylie suggests:
Step one: fill the thermal container with boiling water.
Step two: Close it and leave it to sit for five minutes.
Step three: Empty and refill with boiled water.
Step four: Meanwhile, prep the food by heating beyond hot. Reheat in the microwave or on the stove until near boiling.
Step five: Pour the boiling water from the thermos and fill immediately with the hot
When you do pack your insulated food jar, fill it right up! Kylie says that a full food jar will retain heat the best, as there is no airspace that will quickly chill the food. Following these tips will keep your Zuppa bacteria free until well after your children have emptied it out.
A new addition to the Mini Hippo family, Arctic Zone is a market leader in soft-sided insulated products. With an Ultra Safe Protection System (USPS) guarantee, Arctic Zone products meet CPSC Safety Requirements and are PVC, lead, phthalate and BPA free and FDA-compliant – they’re rigorously tested, and the USPS monitors every stage of the production process to ensure that all products from Arctic Zone are safe. Microban technology is infused into the lining of Arctic Zone products, ensuring the liner will never wash off or wear away. It provides protection against damaging microbes – such as bacteria, mould and mildew that can cause stains, odours and product deterioration – for the lifetime of your Arctic Zone product. Their internal high-density thermal insulation and UltrasafeTM easy clean MicrobanTM lining helps inhibit the growth of odour and stain causing bacteria.
Snack in the Box
Worried about cross-contamination when you pack things like meat and dairy in your children’s lunches, but hate having to use multiple bulky containers? That’s where the Snack in the Box comes in so handy! They’re made from the same BPA- and phthalate-free plastic Tritan as your Yumbox, making them both super-tough and super-safe for little ones, and are dishwasher safe (top-shelf up to 65 degrees Celsius) meaning they’re super easy to clean properly.
According to Australian and New Zealand Food Standards, you need to consider two main food safety issues when transporting food: keeping the food protected from contamination and keeping it cold (5°C or colder) or hot (60°C or hotter). Insulated containers can help you keep your food nice and cool, but they must be in good condition and kept clean at all times. SoYoung’s various insulated food containers – from their poches to their cooler bags and lunchboxes – are easy to clean (you can wipe them down or, with certain materials, even pop them in the washing machine) and come with a leak proof insulated insert for easy cleaning and to help avoid staining from spills. BPA-free, PVC-free, phthalate-free and lead safe!
